"Years ago Julie and I met, two authors with a new book and we instantly became friends, I think perhaps because neither of us possessed the pretentious arrogance at that time possessed by most Australian writers. Not long after Julie wrote the masterpiece, The Longest Winter, in a sense it was her Power of One only a better book. I have never been able to write anything as good and the great tragedy for Australian writing is that only a couple of books later this hugely talented writer chose to hang up her writer's cloak and be something else. Australian writing is the poorer for this decision. Now HOORAY! She's back. Expect big things."
